The Stora Enso pulp mill's 20 year old north landfill was scheduled for closure after the nearby Bearhead landfill was opened. Monitoring wells were constructed and a monitoring program for storm water, leachate, groundwater, and gas vectors was initiated. Innovative use of mill residuals (ash & sludge) as a hydraulic barrier material was prototype tested and incorporated in the design.  A prototype 8 Ha capping section comprising of 4 test cells was constructed and monitored in the autumn of 2001. Based on supportive results the capping operation now utilizes the residual waste products.

Shown above is the ash being screened before it is mixed as part of an innovative mill residuals hydraulic cap material.  This north landfill is quite visible from the Strait of Canso so upon capping completion, trees will be planted and an area for hiking trails will exist. C. J. MacLellan & Associates Inc. are currently operating the close out of this site.
