C.J. MacLellan & Associates Inc. completed a pre-design report in early 1997 recommending  a 25 year landfill plan for solid waste disposal for STORA's Point Tupper facility.  Remediation of an 800,000 m3 waste bark pile was also incorporated in the design concepts.  The design and construction for the 55,000 tonne/year landfill was completed by the end of 1997.  The facility includes leachate collection and storage infrastructure; sediment control (including storage ponds); and 2 km of roads providing access to the 10 hectare area to be used in phase one (8 years of storage capability).  

C.J. MacLellan & Associates Inc. is currently operating the Bear Head Landfill for Stora Enso. Activities include transport from the pulp mill of ash, sludge, and any wood waste, land filling and/or composting activities, leachate collection & treatment, stormwater ponds management and flocculant treatment, groundwater monitoring, and all environmental compliance reporting Remediation of the 800,000 m³ waste bark pile has involved screening, and utilization of the product in compost operations.
